2019 Ford Ranger off-road performance capability gives midsize truck lovers an easier and more fun pickup for both on and off-road. It’s built for enthusiasts seeking a maneuverable, utility and tech packed truck for off-the-grid adventures on weekends. Jump in with Sherwood Ford as we take a first look at the Ranger chassis and driving features.
The adventure-ready 2019 Ford Ranger brings a chassis and powertrain that’s engineered for truck fans who love to leave daily city living for the weekend wilderness! The available FX4 Package provides extra trail capability for drivers who want to head off-road to recharge.
Built Ford Tough is engineered in Rangers DNA – from its high-strength steel fully-boxed frame backbone to its frame-mounted steel front and rear bumpers. Six large hydroformed crossmembers and diagonal reinforcements increase rigidity. Ranger is put through the same torture testing as the legendary F-150 goes through! It’s short overhangs, approach and departure angles add to its functional off-road clearance for obstacles.
Challenging conditions are no match for Ranger equipped with a suspension and shocks that are more advanced, resilient and robust than any of its competitors! It’s forged aluminum front knuckles and tall uprights design allows for finer tuning combined with a robust, boxed upper control arm. The monotube front shocks offer enhanced performance, tuning and fade performance in extreme conditions. At the rear, a modern Parabolic Leaf Spring design provides excellent ride quality and reduced weight. It can handle various off-road forces and loads while eliminating ride harshness and interleaf friction.
Speaking of harshness, the hollow rear jounce bumpers, pictured above the leaf spring, allow for progressive compression. The Ranger has body-to-frame hydromounts and its engine mounts allow for switchable modes. So when combined, bumps and road imperfections, engine vibration, noise and harshness are all isolated. As a result, off-road ride comfort is increased no matter whether you’re at idle or full throttle on the trail!
It’s important to note that all Ranger models in Canada feature four-wheel-drive with 2-high, 4-high and 4-low modes. A rotary knob at the front console, next to the 10-speed automatic transmission shifter, gives drivers the option to electronically shift on the fly to 4WD. As a free standing option, add an electronic -locking rear differential. It’s also quickly engaged with a push-button in front of the 4WD knob and can be engaged below ~32km/h (~72km/h in Sand mode) Don’t worry, the system will automatically disengage and re-engages.
Speaking of Sand mode, Terrain Management gives a great all-terrain driving experience. With the FX4 Off-Road Package, the system includes four distinct drive modes – normal, gravel and snow; mud and ruts, and sand. it can shift on the fly to automatically change throttle responsiveness, transmission gearing and truck controls to tailer traction, driveability and performance to any given terrain or weather condition.
The FX4 Off-Road Package introduces Ford’s all-new Trail Control technology. Like cruise control for the highway, but designed for low-speed, rugged terrain. Trail Control takes over acceleration and braking – sending power and braking to each individual wheel to allow drivers to focus on steering along the course. It can be engaged when in 2H, 4H and 4L between 2-32 km/h.
