Ford Introduces First Self-Driving Delivery Vehicle

The next time you order a pizza, you may not see a delivery person behind the wheel of the delivery car.

While we’re still a few years away from having self-driving vehicles, Ford and Dominoes have partnered together to create a self-driving pizza delivery vehicle. Pizza and Ford vehicles sounds like the perfect combination to us here at Sherwood Ford! Speaking of Ford vehicles, we happen to have a wide variety of new and pre-owned Ford vehicles that we know you’ll love. Self-Driving Technology

Pizza lovers in Ann Arbor, Michigan will be the first to test out this new technology if they choose to opt into the experiment. When choosing the self-driving delivery option, customers will receive three text messages, one while the order is being made, a second when it leaves the store, and a third when the delivery arrives at their home.

When the self-driving delivery car arrives at a customer’s home, the customer must tap in a pin number onto a tablet mounted outside of the vehicle. This pin number tells the right rear window to roll down and give access to the pizza. Sensors around the car are giving engineers and designers at Ford important information on how the customer interacts with the vehicle.

Autonomous Driving in Canada?

While this test is strictly happening in one Dominoes store in Michigan, Ford hopes to provide a fleet of self-driving delivery vehicles in the not-far-off future. We can expect to see a totally redesigned model that has been crafted to optimize customer interaction and ease when the vehicles are released.

At Sherwood Ford, we can hardly contain our excitement for self-driving delivery vehicles even though it appears that we will need to wait a few more years. For more information on the technologies that Ford is currently working on, be sure to keep an eye on our blog as we are committed to keeping you informed on all the latest things happening at Ford.
