When it comes to buying a car, safety is a top concern for most consumers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has recently released its safety ratings for the Ford Explorer, and the results are impressive. According to the IIHS, the 2023 Ford Explorer has earned an overall ‘good’ rating in updated front overlap crash testing. In fact, the Explorer was one of only four midsize SUVs to receive the IIHS top-tier good rating out of the 13 vehicles tested. Additionally, when equipped with specific headlights, the Explorer has been recognized by IIHS as a TOP SAFETY PICK.
One of the reasons the Explorer performed so well in crash testing is its advanced safety features. Ford uses seat belts with pre-tensioner and load-limiting technology in both the first and second rows to help achieve these latest test results. This means that in the event of a crash, the seat belts automatically tighten to keep passengers in their seats and reduce the risk of injury.
It’s not just the Explorer that has earned top safety ratings. The Mustang Mach-E, an electric midsize SUV, also achieved good ratings in every safety category tested by IIHS, making it the top-scoring electric midsize SUV of all tested through today. Like the Explorer, the Mach-E was recognized as a TOP SAFETY PICK when equipped with specific headlights.
“Safety and quality are two of our top priorities. Receiving this recognition from IIHS for Mustang Mach-E and Explorer has reaffirmed that we’re focused in the right places to help make our customers’ lives better.”
– Jim Baumbick, vice president, Ford Product Development and Quality
It’s worth noting that the new IIHS 2.0 moderate front overlap crash testing now includes measuring impact to rear-seat occupants in addition to front passengers. The same good rating applies to all Mustang Mach-E models since it was introduced and the 2022-23 Ford Explorer. This means that both the front and rear occupants of these vehicles are well-protected in the event of a crash.
