10 Steps to change a flat tire

  1. Pull over to the side of the road or onto the shoulder, preferably away from any curves in the road so other driver’s can see you.
  2. Turn on your hazard lights and engage your parking brake.
  3. Gather the lug nut wrench, car jack, and spare tire.
  4. Use the wrench to loosen the lug nuts, but do not remove them completely.
  5. Place the car jack under the edge of the vehicle at the spot of the flat tire. You may need to refer to your vehicle owner’s manual to figure out where exactly the jack should be placed.
  6. Use the car jack to raise your vehicle about six inches off the ground.
  7. Finish removing the lug nuts and pull the tire straight toward you.
  8. Place the spare tire onto the vehicle, and put the lug nuts back on. Turn them by hand so they aren’t too tight.
  9. Use the car jack to lower your car back to the ground.
  10. Tighten the lug nuts completely with the wrench.

Now that you have successfully changed your flat tire, you should be able to make it to your destination. Keep in mind that spare tires are designed to be temporary replacements, so you should have it replaced with a new tire as soon as possible.
