When you purchase a new Ford with Sync 3 technology, you’ll be able to integrate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto infotainment systems. You’ll likely be partial to the Android or iOS operating system if you regularly use one or the other with a smartphone or tablet.
We’ve had a chance to play around with each system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto feature two different interfaces, but for the most part, are after the same thing. These onboard operating systems mimic the system’s native to their devices.
Apple CarPlay will look a lot like your iPhone screen, with a group of large icons on home screen you can scroll through. Unlike your phone, you can’t really go any deeper than the actual application. CarPlay is meant to be super simple. If you like your iPhone, you’ll like the CarPlay system.
Android Auto also looks an Android phone, with a simpler, parsed down operating system. Android Auto features Google Now, a live-updating, stream of weather information and notifications based on your search results.
You’re able to connect a compatible iOS or Android device to CarPlay or Android Auto. You connect any compatible device using Bluetooth or USB cable.

One of the biggest differences between the infotainment systems is the native apps. Google Maps is arguably better than Apple Maps. Google Maps looks fantastic in the display, and can provide suggested destinations and other types of driving information along the way.
Apple CarPlay currently supports text messaging and iMessaging, and reads aloud texts as you receive them. Android Auto allows a host of third-party apps for messaging like WhatsApp, Skype, and more.
