Though much has changed in the pickup industry over the years, one thing has and most likely will remain constant – as much as a well-built, strong and innovative pickup build matters, what’s most important is the engine that lies inside, ready to work for you at a moment’s notice. That’s why American-made trucks like the Ford Super Duty, Ram 2500 and Chevy Silverado 2500 HD have put so much research and development into providing blue-collar workers with all the strength and relentless power they need. We want to give you a closer look at each powertrain that these legendary trucks offer, so join Sherwood Ford as we show you our Power Stroke vs. Cummins vs. Duramax diesel engine comparison!
More Ford Truck Info: 2019 Super Duty new features and capabilities
We’ll start first with the 2019 Super Duty, whose 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V8® is capable of offering best-in-class horsepower and torque ratings, offering 450 horsepower and an incredible 935 pound-feet of torque output.
This also allows the 2019 Super Duty to haul a maximum conventional towing capacity of 21,000 pounds and a maximum payload of 7,640 pounds. Both of these ratings are also best in their class, and it makes the 2019 Super Duty feel more like an 18 wheeler with a truck configuration than any other competitors.
Moving on to the 2019 RAM heavy-duty pickups, these offer a 6.6L Cummins® Turbo Diesel Inline 6; it’s no slouch either, as you can expect as much as 370 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque, as well as maximum tow ratings as high as 17,980 pounds and payload as high as 3,160 pounds.
Due to its construction qualities, this Cummins engine also boasts a best-in-class oil change interval of 15,000 miles (or 24,140 kilometres), but really, when considering the Ford and Ram lines, there’s no debate over which truck’s engine is better equipped for your busy life.
The last stop on our tour through North America’s best-performing pickups leads us to the Chevrolet model line, whose Silverado HD line features a 6.6L Duramax V8 diesel engine. It’s able to handle up to 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque, which, outside of the lens of this comparison, is a rather impressive number in its own right.
In addition, this Duramax engine can provide a maximum towing capacity of 23,300 pounds and a payload capacity nearing 6,137 pounds, though you’ll need an upgrade to much higher and stronger trims to achieve these kinds of numbers.
