Will charging an electric vehicle be as fast as filling up a gas tank? We hope so, and it looks like Ford researchers are taking steps toward the technology which can make that possible. Why does charging an electric vehicle take longer than filling up a gas-powered model? 

Currently, it takes longer to charge an electric vehicle than it does to fill up a gas-powered model. As Ford explains in its recent press release, this is due to the risk of overheating with electric charging. For this reason, it has to be done at a slower pace. However, with the liquid cooling technology that researchers of Ford and Purdue University are developing, the risk of overheating could be mediated. 

When will fast-charging cables be available for Ford vehicles? 

Ford states that fast-charging cables won’t be available for “some time,” which doesn’t give us a specific date to look forward to. What we do know is that electric vehicles usually come with a charging cord that can be used at home for a full overnight charge, a convenience for many drivers who leave their vehicles in a garage overnight. Faster charging stations are available, although they can’t compete with gas stations just yet in terms of the amount of time taken.
