There has always been the old adage that you should change your oil every 3,000 miles, unfortunately, that is not a true statement. Advancements in engine engineering and oil developments have changed the old perception of needing to change your oil and oil filters more frequently. Since most engines now use synthetic oil, vehicles are able to go more miles before needing to have an oil change. Many manufacturers now recommend an oil change about every 7,500 miles or so. Though the most accurate way for an owner to know the suggested mileage is to consult their vehicle's owner's manual.
Ford and other vehicle manufacturers now include an oil life monitoring feature with vehicles, so a driver just needs to check that in order to plan how much longer they can go before an oil change. But when the driving conditions are severe, it is recommended to change your oil more frequently. Severe conditions can include frequent trailer towing, extensive stop-and-go traffic, long periods of idling, driving short distances when the vehicle is not at operating temperature, or driving in extreme hot or cold weather.
