City living can be a blast, especially when you’re surrounded with the kind of cultural heritages and fun that’s offered here in Alberta’s capital. We do know, however, that sometimes you just need to get away from it all, which is why we consider ourselves blessed to be able to live on one of the most beautiful parts of the planet. Load up your Ford vehicle, take some of your more adventurous friends along, and hit up the Trans-Canada on your way to some of the best summer road trip destinations within four hours of Edmonton AB!
About 25 kilometres to the west of Red Deer lies Sylvan Lake, a resort town that’s home to one of the most beautiful parks in the province. This 67-hectare waterfront area allows plenty of opportunities to soak in some rays, or head out on the lake with your canoe to enjoy the views!
Probably the closest thing that Alberta has to Jurassic Park, Drumheller is located about halfway between Calgary and Red Deer, and features plenty to love about our ancient inhabitants of the planet. Check out the fossil shop, hike the trails, and even climb the World’s Largest Dinosaur, checking in at over 26 metres tall!
Back when the Klondike Trail was the main route to the Yukon for gold miners, Fort Assiniboine was a premier stopping point for travelers to rest, relax and get ready for the journey ahead. Though the original fort is no longer there, Fort Assiniboine is still a Canadian National Historic Site, also home to the world’s largest Wagon Wheel and Pick Axe. It’s small-town charm you must check out!
You’d be forgiven for preferring Banff over all other Alberta parks, but if you’re not up for the extra hour of driving to get there from EDM, Jasper is a more-than-suitable alternative. In the summer, this park comes alive with the sights of waterfalls, lakes, and tall trees juxtaposed on mountainous backgrounds. Be sure to bring a camera along – you won’t want to forget the experience that Jasper National Park provides!
